Gasperini's Atalanta Stuns Marseille, Reaches Europa League Quarterfinals
Historic triumph for Italian club, but coach remains hungry for more
"The wolf is not as bad as it seemed," says Gasperini after Atalanta's win over Roma
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini beamed with pride after his team's stunning 3-0 victory over Marseille in the Europa League Round of 16. The win sends Atalanta to the quarterfinals for the first time in club history.
"It was a difficult match against a strong team," Gasperini said in a post-match press conference. "But we showed great character and determination, and in the end, we deserved to win."
Atalanta's victory was all the more impressive considering that Marseille had won the first leg 2-1. But Gasperini's men turned the tie on its head with a dominant display at the Stade Vélodrome.
"We knew it would be a tough match, but we believed in ourselves," Gasperini said. "We played with great intensity and passion, and we created a lot of chances. We could have even won by more."
While Gasperini was delighted with his team's performance, he was quick to point out that Atalanta's work is not yet done. "We have achieved a historic triumph, but we cannot rest on our laurels," he said. "The final is still a long way off, and we need to remain focused and determined if we want to win it."
