Pasadena City College Kicks Off Month-Long Celebration of Latino Heritage

‘Latinx Heritage is American Heritage’ celebration explores history, culture and tradition

Pasadena City College (PCC) will kick off a month-long celebration of Latino Heritage on 15 September with a series of events that highlight the history, culture and traditions of the Latino community. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Latinx Heritage is American Heritage.”

Schedule of Events

  1. 15 September: Opening ceremony and keynote address by Dr. Juan C. Guerra, PCC’s first Latino superintendent/president, in the school’s Vosloh Forum at 10 a.m.
  2. 20 September: Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuellar at 1 p.m. in the school’s Vosloh Forum.
  3. 22 September: Ballet Folklorico Ollin Yoliztli at 12:30 p.m. in the school’s Vosloh Forum.
  4. 27 September: Screening of the film “Dolores” at 12:30 p.m. in the school’s Vosloh Forum.
  5. 29 September: Performance by folkloric dance group Quetzalcoatl at 11 a.m. outside the school’s Humanities Building.

All events are free and open to the public and are being sponsored by the PCC Office of Student Life, Associated Student Union and the school’s Latinx Student Success Collaborative.

“We are excited to celebrate the rich culture and traditions of our Latino students, faculty and staff,” Guerra said in a statement. “This celebration is an opportunity for our entire community to come together and learn more about the contributions that Latinos have made to our country.”

According to the Pew Research Center, Latinos are the largest minority group in the United States, with a population of over 62 million. In California, Latinos make up over 39% of the population.
