Steve Kerr: Accomplished Basketball Coach and Former NBA Star
Early Life and Playing Career
Stephen Douglas Kerr was born on September 27, 1965, in Beirut, Lebanon. The son of a diplomat, Kerr spent much of his childhood overseas. In 1983, he enrolled at the University of Arizona, where he played basketball under legendary coach Lute Olson.
Kerr emerged as a skilled guard for the Wildcats, leading the team to the Final Four in 1988. He was selected 50th overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1988 NBA Draft.
Kerr spent 15 seasons in the NBA, playing for the Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, Portland Trail Blazers, and San Antonio Spurs. He was known for his exceptional shooting skills, winning the Three-Point Shootout at the 1997 NBA All-Star Weekend.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Kerr transitioned to coaching. He served as an assistant coach for the Suns and Warriors from 2004 to 2014, before being appointed head coach of the Warriors in May 2014.
Under Kerr's leadership, the Warriors have enjoyed immense success. They have won four NBA championships in eight seasons, including three consecutive titles from 2017 to 2019.
International Coaching
In addition to his NBA success, Kerr was appointed head coach of the United States national basketball team in 2023. He led the team to a silver medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
